BMC RECORDS 25 Years of Jazz - Part1
Digital album
This first release in a series celebrating 25 years of BMC Records is a jazz compilation covering roughly the first half of the label’s activity. During this time, most of our recordings were based on collaborations between Hungarian bands and prestigious guests from abroad.
In addition to musicians who have since been defining figures in the Hungarian jazz scene and whose reputations have flourished abroad, such as Mihály Dresch, Béla Szakcsi Lakatos, Szabados György, Miklós Lukács, Gábor Gadó, Csaba Palotai, István Grencsó, Kornél Fekete-Kovács, Mihály Borbély, and Gábor Winand, the list of foreign artists is imposing too: among the American performers we find Archie Shepp, Chris Potter, Jack DeJohnette, John Patitucci, Dave Liebman, Charlie Mariano, Larry Grenadier, Eric Harland, Hamid Drake, Lionel Loueke, and Frank London, and BMC’s firm attachment to Europe since the beginning is clear from collaborations with outstanding musicians such as Erik Truffaz, Joachim Kühn, Hans Lüdemann, Christophe Monniot, Michael Schiefel, and Michiel Braam.
The first decade of operation of BMC Records laid the foundation for its international reputation; indeed, this compilation features several musicians who over the years became key figures on the European scene, such as Émile Parisien, Thomas de Pourquery, Airelle Besson, Sylvain Rifflet, Manu Codjia and Jörg Brinkmann.
This compilation, which picks out both hits and lesser known treasures, was made subjectively, so it reflects both the beginnings of BMC Records, and the label’s current outlook.
This 25-track double CD is representative but far from exhaustive, and despite the necessary limitations imposed by the playing time, it attempts to give a comprehensive picture: to show what jazz, in all its diversity, has to say today.
